BATAAD -- Tony and I made an overnight trek to the beautiful village of Bataad. There were three small guesthouses in Bataad when Tony took me there in 1988. As a result of a mid-1990s tourist boom there are now seven large lodges in Bataad. The effect of 9/11? On the night I visited in February, 2004, I was the only tourist in the whole village. Tony and I ate dinner with the forlorn owner of our lodge, in a restaurant with seats for 50.
