TONY'S FATHER, PEDRO -- Tony's father, Pedro, (and Pedro's wife, Flora) live 150 yards from Tony and Rita. Pedro and Flora have 10 children and more than 40 grandchildren. Pedro's father was killed by Japanese soldiers during World War II when Pedro was three, and Pedro has great fondness for America, whose soldiers liberated the Philippines and Banaue. After the war Pedro attended school, where he learned his still-excellent English, and where, for the only period of his life, he wore shoes. Pedro and Flora work their many rice paddies barefoot every single day. "A day without work is not a day, Pedro told me.
